From Friday evening until Saturday evening, Šeduva’s railway station was empty—religious townspeople didn’t travel on Shabbat. The only ones left were the young people, who gathered to chat and enjoy some freshly poured soda.

But one Saturday, a young, striking Jewish woman, carrying a white boar-skin suitcase, appeared at the station. Word of her arrival spread quickly, and everyone was eager to find out why she was traveling on Shabbat.

The woman explained that she was waiting for her sister, who was returning from America with a fortune and planned to share it with the people of Šeduva.

Moved by the news, the townsfolk welcomed her warmly. They invited her to their homes, treated her to food, and the young men vied for her attention. Matchmakers soon crowded the house where she was staying.

But the sister never arrived… The girl spent all her money, grew sad, and started worrying. The people of Šeduva continued to comfort her and offer financial support—after all, the journey from America was long!

One night, the girl disappeared, leaving a note saying she had gone to Virbalis to wait for her sister and would return soon. The people of Šeduva waited a few more days, but soon realized—the Messiah would return before this mysterious guest ever did.

This cautionary tale was shared in the Forverts newspaper by Kaunas journalist Isidor Laser.
